Add Columns to the Body Field

Below are example and directions on how to turn a bulleted list into multiple columns of equal width, as well as how to insert unequal columns into the body field.

These techniques offers a way to add columns to the body field of your content. Directions follow the examples below.

Turn Bulleted List(s) into Columns

In these examples, the resulting columns will all be the same width.

Example One: Turn one bulleted list into columns without bullets

For example, this list:


  • Column One Title
    This is the content that will be the first column. Enter Shift + Enter to begin a new line without a bullet icon. Do not use Enter to begin a new line or paragraph; only use (Shift + Enter).  Enter (Shift + Enter) twice to add a blank line between paragraphs. Continue to add your content if you want the text to wrap. 

    Entering Return will create a new bullet and, therefore a new column. A style cannot be applied to the title or it will apply to the entire paragraph. To distinguish the title the bold style can be applied.
  • Column Two Title
    This is the content that will be the first column. Enter Shift + Enter to begin a new line without a bullet icon. Do not use Enter to begin a new line or paragraph; only use (Shift + Enter).  Enter (Shift + Enter) twice to add a blank line between paragraphs. Continue to add your content if you want the text to wrap. 

    Entering Return will create a new bullet and, therefore a new column. A style cannot be applied to the title or it will apply to the entire paragraph. To distinguish the title the bold style can be applied.
  • Column Three Title

Example Two: TURN more than ONE BULLETED LIST INTO COLUMNS

In another example, you can style the heading, however in this case, a return (Enter key) must be used to create a new line or paragraph. This option will retain the level two bullets. For example, these two lists:

  • Column One Title

    • This is the content that will be line one in the first column list.
    • This is the content that will be line two in the first column list.
    • This is the content that will be line three in the first column list.
  • Column Two Title

    • This is the content that will be line one in the second column list.
    • This is the content that will be line two in the second column list.
    • This is the content that will be line three in the second column list.

can be turned into these two columns:


  • Column One Title

    • This is the content that will be line one in the first column list.
    • This is the content that will be line two in the first column list.
    • This is the content that will be line three in the first column list.
  • Column Two Title

    • This is the content that will be line one in the second column list.
    • This is the content that will be line two in the second column list.
    • This is the content that will be line three in the second column list.

Directions:

  1. Create the bulleted lists. Format the headings based on what type of column you are creating.
    1. The first example, which shows the columns without any bullets, can only be changed to bold.
    2. The second example, which shows the columns with bulleted lists, can be styled with a heading style.
  2. Once your list is complete, highlight the entire list.
  3. From the Styles drop down, select the number of columns to turn the lists into by selecting the appropriate Block Grid.
    1. As shown in example one above, Block Grid 3 was selected.
    2. As shown in example two above, Block Grid 2 was selected.

Insert Unequal Columns Into the Body Field

Turn two paragraphs into two columns by selecting the paragraphs and adding the Large-# Column style from the Styles menu to each paragraph. The body field is 12 columns wide so the column combination should equal 12. For example, these two paragraphs:


Paragraph One
This is the content that will be in the left column. Enter Shift + Enter to begin a new line. Do not use Enter to begin a new line or paragraph; only use (Shift + Enter).  Enter (Shift + Enter) twice to add a blank line between paragraphs. Continue to add your content if you want the text to wrap. 

Entering Return will create a new paragraph and if room permits a new column.

Paragraph Two
This is the content that will be in the left column. Enter Shift + Enter to begin a new line. Do not use Enter to begin a new line or paragraph; only use (Shift + Enter).  Enter (Shift + Enter) twice to add a blank line between paragraphs. Continue to add your content if you want the text to wrap.

can be turned into two columns where the left column is wider than the right column. The sample below is Large-8 Column on the left and Large-4 Column on the right.  Large-3 Column and Large-9 Column is an option as well.


Paragraph One

The paragraphs can be turned into two columns where the right column is wider than the left column. The sample below is Large-3 Column on the left with a Large-9 Column on the right. A Large-4 Column and Large-8 Column is an option as well.

Entering Return will create a new paragraph and if room permits a new column.

Directions:

  1. Create the two paragraphs. The first paragraph will be the right column; the second paragraph will be the left column.
  2. Highlight the first paragraph.
  3. From the Styles drop down, select the appropriate Large-# Column. The second paragraph will wrap around it.
  4. Highlight the second paragraph.
  5. From the Styles drop down, select the appropriate Large-# Column.
  6. Additional paragraphs and heading styles can be added to each column depending on the area available.  Please be aware a return(Enter) may result in a new column being created. In this case, a new paragraph  can be created by entering a break (Shift + Enter) rather than a return.
