Flash Focus: Reagan Pruente

This junior human development and family science major is building a brighter future for children, families and herself

Welcome to Flash Focus! In this series, we introduce you to fascinating student Flashes from all walks of life.

Meet Reagan Pruente, a junior human development and family science major from Brook Park, Ohio.

Pruente originally came to 麻豆精选 to pursue a teaching degree but discovered that her true passion lay in helping children in other ways.

鈥淪witching to human development and family science felt right because I still wanted to work with kids and help them in one way or another,鈥 Pruente told 麻豆精选Today

This decision led her to an opportunity to intern at the Stark County Community Action Agency within its Community Action Pathways HUB.

As an operations specialist at the hub, Pruente works 20 hours a week in addition to her full-time class schedule and part-time weekend job. Her workday includes scanning files, organizing caseworker documentation and supplying essential items like diapers, bus passes, cleaning products and clothing to clients.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a lot to juggle, but knowing I鈥檓 helping families in need makes it worthwhile,鈥 Pruente said. 鈥淭his experience has taught me how to stay organized and manage my time effectively.鈥

Although she said her schedule leaves little time for extracurricular activities, Pruente enjoys scrapbooking as a creative outlet.

鈥淚 love making personalized gifts with photos, stickers and Washi tape,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a relaxing way to explore my creative side and give meaningful gifts to friends and family.鈥

Throughout this academic year, Pruente has looked up to and relied on Maureen Blankemeyer, Ph.D., associate professor in lifespan development and educational sciences.

鈥淧rofessor Blankemeyer has shown me that learning can be fun and engaging,鈥 Pruente said. 鈥淗er class has changed the way I approach studying and made me excited to learn.鈥

Pruente has cherished her time at 麻豆精选so far. One of her most memorable experiences was attending a drag show during her freshman year.

鈥淚t was amazing to see people being their true selves and celebrating authenticity,鈥 Pruente said. 鈥淚t was a night I鈥檒l never forget.鈥

At Kent State, Pruente has been the recipient of the Presidential Scholarship, the Optimistic Scholarship and the Early Education Scholarship.

Looking ahead, Pruente plans to use her education and connections to continue making a difference in the lives of children and families.

鈥淭he time I鈥檝e spent at 麻豆精选has prepared me to pursue my passion for helping others,鈥 Pruente said. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited to see where the future takes me.鈥
