Kwangtaek Kim
Biography
Research fields: haptics (touch feedback), human computer /machine interface, virtual /Augmented Reality, haptics based applications.
Dr. Kim received a Ph.D degree from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, IN, USA, in 2010 in the field of Haptics, and a BE and an ME from Korea University in 1998 (military service included) and 2001, respectively. Since August 2019, he has been a faculty member in the department of computer science at 麻豆精选. Prior to joining Kent, he was an associate professor in the department of information and telecommunication engineering at Incheon National University, Incheon, Republic of Korea. He holds an affiliate visiting professor position at University of Paris-Est Creteil (UPEC), Paris, France. He was a full time researcher in the group of HCI at Microsoft Research Asia and a chief research engineer at LG Advanced Research Institute, and a researcher at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center, NYC. Besides, prior to his PhD study at Purdue, he worked for several companies including LG Electronics and KERI (Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute) as a software engineer and a researcher developing multimedia technologies for mobile phones and image processing for biomedical applications. He received the Distinguished Teaching Award from Incheon National University in 2016, Spot Award from Microsoft Research in 2013, and Outstanding Engineer Award from LGE in 2005. His research focuses on haptic technologies including feedback and sensing, optimal perception with two sensory channels (vision and touch), new HCIs for mobile devices or cars, innovative touch input technologies, haptics assisted imaging systems for medical applications, haptic signal design and synthesis, brain signal based haptic interface, 3D haptic rendering, haptic data hiding, and wearable robots with haptic feedback for rehabilitation. He is currently a member of IEEE Technical Committee on Haptics, a member of IEEE RAS (Robotics and Automation Society) Technical Committee on Cognitive Robotics, a member of IEEE Signal Processing, and a member of ACM (Association for Computing Machinery). He has been serving as a reviewer for several scientific journals including IEEE Transactions on Haptics, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing (Perception), IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics (Haptics), IEEE Transactions on Information, Forensic and Security (Perception and 3D Watermarking), and international conferences such as IEEE IROS and ICRA, and World Haptics. He also served as the program chair of a special session, IEEE BioSmart2017 held on August 2017, Paris, France.
