About the Exploratory Learning Community:

The Exploratory Learning Community is a great way for Exploratory students to build connections with their peers and gain access to more support through their career and major exploration. All first-year Exploratory students are automatically enrolled within the Exploratory Learning Community and have the ability to live with their peers in Lake Hall, live across campus, or commute to campus.

Why become an Exploratory Mentor?

The Exploratory Mentor position is an integral position within the Exploratory Program in University College. Mentors are responsible for carrying out the mission of the program by helping first-year Exploratory students build community, explore major and careers, develop leadership skills, and achieve academic and college success.

 

Exploratory Mentor Application Information

POSITION DESCRIPTION
  • Looking to hire 4 Exploratory Mentors for the 2025-2026 school year. 
  • Provide support to the Exploratory Learning Community students, including insight and personal experience in major and career exploration, leadership and academic and college success 
  • Scheduled shifts in the learning community office located in Lake Hall and Exploratory Advising Center in CUE during designated hours weekly. 
  • Attend monthly Mentor staff meetings and bi-weekly one-on-one touch-base meetings with supervisor 
  • Collaborate with mentor (peers) and Lake Hall Resident Advisors and staff 
  • Assist and/or lead programming for the learning community both small and large scale. For example, programming could include planning, hosting, communication, marketing, and assessment 
  • Assist with the ongoing efforts of the Exploratory Program including, but not limited to, social media, career development programming, and retention and outreach efforts 
  • Collaborate with Advisors in the EAC to serve a specific cohort of students through programming, outreach, and relationship building 
  • Maintain office visits and program reports, logs and forms 
  • Represent the learning community program and mentor program at outreach programs and events, e.g., Admissions programs 
  • Serve as a liaison between Exploratory students and Exploratory Program in University College 
  • May serve as a Peer Success Mentor for Flashes 101 course (Fall 2025)
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher 
  • Completion of the P.E.E.R Success Academy (or equivalent) by end of Spring 2025 semester 
  • Enrolled as a full-time student (12 credit hours minimum) each semester for the 2025-2026 academic year 
  • Available to serve in the role for the 2025-2026 academic year and training held late Spring 2025
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Former experience as an Exploratory student
  • Former experience participating in the Exploratory Learning Community
  • Knowledge of the needs of first-year Exploratory students
HIRING TIMELINE
  • January 27, 2025: Online Application Available 
  • Feb. 21, 2025: All application materials are due by 5 pm 
  • Feb. 24-Mar. 7, 2025: Mentor candidate interviews 
  • March 17, 2025: - Mentor staff selection made 
  • April 18, 2025: Mandatory Exploratory Mentor staff orientation
