Volunteers make freshman move-in day less stressful for new students and their families
Â鶹¾«Ñ¡ faculty, staff and students volunteer to help incoming freshmen move into the university’s residence halls at the beginning of each school year.
This year, freshman move-in day is Thursday, Aug. 25, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Last year, the Movers and Groovers program garnered 921 volunteers. Jill Church, director of Residence Services at Kent State, anticipates more than 900 volunteers again this year.
“The program is completely student run and organized,†Church says. “Kent Interhall Council is the group responsible for this program. Volunteers include fraternities and sororities, campus ministry groups, academic groups and university departments. Everyone here at Â鶹¾«Ñ¡really loves to get involved with the freshman move-in program.â€
This year, Movers and Groovers will wear ’90s-themed outfits and play music from the ’90s, while assisting new students.
The Movers and Groovers program is part of Kent State’s Welcome Weekend, an orientation program that will run from Aug. 25-29. Welcome Weekend includes activities and events to encourage students to explore the Â鶹¾«Ñ¡community and provides a smooth transition to the university environment.
