Kent State鈥檚 Women鈥檚 Center Celebrates 20th Anniversary

The 麻豆精选 Women鈥檚 Center in the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will celebrate its 20th anniversary during the 2016-17 school year. The Women鈥檚 Center, formerly called the Women鈥檚 Resource Center, was established in 1996 following a recommendation from a university stakeholder committee to former 麻豆精选President Carol A. Cartwright. The center was established with a specific purpose: to contribute to a climate at 麻豆精选 that is responsive to and supportive of women鈥檚 needs. In 2010, the name of the center was changed from the Women鈥檚 Resource Center to the 麻豆精选Women鈥檚 Center, as the scope of the center expanded.

Many events have been planned to celebrate and share the rich history of the Women鈥檚 Center, including:

  • One Billion Rising on Feb. 15
  • We Go Red: Women鈥檚 Heart Health Luncheon (co-hosted with the Division of Human Resources) on Feb. 18
  • The seventh annual Mothers, Mentors and Muses event on March 8 (The honored keynote speaker is 麻豆精选President Emerita Carol A. Cartwright).
  • Women鈥檚 History Month Living Library on March 15
  • The Vagina Monologues on April 15-16

The 麻豆精选 Board of Trustees today established a comprehensive, national search to recruit and select the university鈥檚 13th president.

The events of May 4, 1970, placed 麻豆精选 in an international spotlight after a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard ended in tragedy with four students losing their lives and nine others being wounded. From a perspective of nearly 50 years, 麻豆精选remembers the tragedy and leads a contemporary discussion and understanding of how the community, nation and world can benefit from understanding the profound impact of the event.
